The Complete Resource on the Ten Gods in BaZi

Now that you've learned about your dominant gods from your report, you can explore detailed information about each of the Ten Gods in this article. Although each god belongs to a specific structure category, it's entirely possible for a chart to have both gods from the same category as dominant forces—or even none at all! As you’ll read further, each structure includes two gods that represent Yin and Yang energies, which are similar but have contrasting qualities. This is why individuals with all ten gods in their charts often have multi-faceted, complex personalities that can be hard to understand, while those with fewer gods tend to be more straightforward and easier to read.

Ten Gods in BaZi
Direct Resources (DR) – The Analyst

If Direct Resource is your dominant god, you might be known in your circle as The Analyst. Direct Resource symbolizes introspection, analysis, and wisdom, reflecting your ability to learn from experiences, absorb information, excel in academic pursuits, and make sound decisions.

With Direct Resource as a dominant or one of your main gods, you are likely to excel in fields requiring extensive research, strategic thinking, careful analysis, problem-solving, and intense focus. Careers involving research, R&D, and consulting would align well with your strengths.

In relationships, those with strong Direct Resource often display attentiveness and seek intellectual connections with their partners. To fully harness the strengths of Direct Resource, balanced self-reflection, continuous learning, and effective communication are essential.

Remember that Direct Resources individual deal with the traditional and the conventional—you make decisions based on facts and logic. If you have a healthy amount of Direct Resource in your chart—and especially if it is considered prosperous and favourable to your daymaster—you are likely to display these positive qualities. However, if Direct Resource is unfavourable i.e. present in excess or deficiency, or not supported by your season of birth, it may manifest as overthinking, analysis paralysis, hesitation, and indecisiveness.

When paired with gods from the Wealth structure as one of your dominant gods, Direct Resource can support financially rewarding pursuits. For instance, combined with Indirect Wealth, it encourages creativity and innovation, while pairing with Direct Wealth cultivates a responsible, top-level managerial profile. When combined with Direct Officer from the Influence structure, it strengthens skills in diplomacy and communication. In relationships, pairing with Indirect Resources fosters empathy, and in creative pursuits, a combination with Eating God from the Output structure enhances creativity and self-expression.

Biggest Strengths: You’re a quick learner, able to pick up new skills with ease, often leaving others envious of your sharp mind! You thrive in well-structured environments, where your talents shine best.

Indirect Resources (IR) – The Philosopher

Indirect Resources, often called the ‘unconventional cousin’ of Direct Resources, prefer to think outside the box. While Direct Resources thrive with traditional methods, Indirect Resources are drawn to unique, less-travelled paths. Known as The Philosopher, they have the tendency to rely on experiential learning and intuition rather than facts and logic for decision-making.

If Indirect Resources is a dominant influence in your BaZi chart, you are likely a natural seeker, driven by a deep desire to understand the world. This approach grants you unique insights, making you a creative problem-solver. You may feel a strong connection to spiritual or religious practices and often provide comfort and support to others during challenging times. A distinct trait of Indirect Resources is their nurturing nature, which attracts mentors and helpful individuals into their lives. You not only receive assistance from others but frequently play a guiding role for those around you.

However, Indirect Resources come with their own challenges. This non-traditional approach can sometimes clash with structured environments, leading to feelings of not fitting in. If Indirect Resources are unfavourable, excessive, or lacking in your chart, you may experience overthinking or decision paralysis. Strong spiritual leanings can sometimes pull you away from practical realities, resulting in impractical choices. Additionally, an unhealthy Indirect Resource influence may lead to over-reliance on external guidance, which can hinder self-confidence. If you frequently mentor others, you may risk becoming overly involved in their issues at the expense of yourself.

People with strong Indirect Resources excel in roles that allow for deep exploration or nurturing of others. Their spiritual inclinations may draw them to careers in counselling, therapy, or roles in religious and spiritual institutions. Creative fields like writing, music, designing and visual arts also serve as excellent outlets for their unique perspectives and deep introspection. Their nurturing and protective qualities align well with healthcare and social work. However, they may face challenges in highly structured, routine-driven environments that don't appreciate their unconventional approach.

Biggest Strengths: You’re open-minded, empathetic, and naturally skilled at thinking outside the box. You have a nurturing presence that not only cares for others but also draws care and support in return.

 Friend (F) – The Connector

The Friend god, also known as The Connector, highlights the importance of relationships, showcasing the way we connect with others and the intricate dynamics of human connections in our lives.

Friend represents how well a person aligns with others who share similar backgrounds, values, or perspectives. Those with a strong and balanced Friend god tend to form connections easily, fostering friendships based on mutual understanding and shared experiences. These relationships often feel effortless, as they are rooted in common ground and shared values.

However, Friend isn’t just about camaraderie; it also brings an element of competition. Individuals with a dominant Friend star may find themselves vying for similar goals or recognition as their peers. When people share similar elemental attributes, they may feel an affinity, but this closeness can sometimes spark competition. If you have Friend as a dominant god and meet someone else with Friend as the dominant god, both of you may find yourselves striving toward similar achievements, whether in career, social status, or personal milestones. This competition can be healthy and motivating, encouraging self-improvement, but it may also strain relationships if rivalry intensifies. Note that while this similarity can create a natural bond, it may also limit personal growth if it reduces opportunities to balance each other’s strengths. For those with Friend as a primary influence in their chart, life often revolves around both the joys of companionship and the challenges of rivalry.

With a healthy amount of Friend in your chart, you are likely to have genuine and supportive friendships built on shared values and mutual respect. When Friend is balanced and supported by your season of birth, it indicates friendships that are not only fulfilling but also long-lasting. Such connections thrive on understanding, growth, and mutual support. People with healthy amount of Friend value camaraderie and enjoy the company of familiar, like-minded individuals.

Conversely, if Friend is imbalanced—either too strong or too weak—it may lead to fleeting friendships marked by misunderstandings and unequal reciprocity. In such cases, individuals may either become very independent and experience loneliness, or find themselves involved in shallow connections that lack depth.

In sum, Friend reflects the duality of relationships in life: it brings both the warmth of kinship and the challenges of rivalry.

Biggest Strengths: Your ability to forge strong, deep and long-lasting relationship with others

Rob Wealth (RW) – The Leader

Rob Wealth in BaZi is also known as The Leader. Unlike Friend which represents the duality of camaraderie and competition, Rob Wealth is its more aggressive cousin with stronger emphasis on competition and leadership, rather than connection and affinity.

Those with strong Rob Wealth influences are natural leaders who excel in dynamic environments. They are challengers, often seen as rebels or pioneers—they actively question the norm, push boundaries, and spark innovation everywhere they go. If Rob Wealth is one of your dominant gods, you exude strong competitive energy which can threaten people and bring about conflicts, especially in personal relationships. You need to balance this Rob Wealth energy to allow you to navigate situations in which your leadership qualities are sorely needed, while minimizing interpersonal conflicts.

If Rob Wealth is one of your dominant gods and it is of good quality (both favourable to you and is supported by your season of birth), you have both confidence and charisma to be the leader that attract followers everywhere you go. You have contagious energy and determination, and people are very easily inspired by you. You just have it in you to make others believe in your cause—a very valuable power especially in this day and age. You are suited to work in leadership roles in which you are needed to take the lead in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. It will also be ideal if you are given enough autonomy to rally others to pursue your ambitions. However, you also need to tamper your impatient and unrealistic perfectionist character especially when dealing with people who do things that are ‘too slow’ to your liking and do not meet your high standards. Your competitive nature also results in (often) an overly assertive and controlling personality which can easily lead to friction. In relationships, you are also prone to struggle with power dynamics and you are easily challenged by perceived threats to your authority. You also need to be careful of the show of your confidence as sometimes they can be wrongly interpreted as arrogance by others.

If Rob Wealth is either excessive or completely absent in your chart, it may be harder for you to embody its positive traits. Instead, you might experience opposite qualities, like difficulty leading with purpose, an aversion to competition, or a tendency to compete in unhealthy ways. You may also struggle to align others with your goals and might face issues with low self-confidence. This imbalance can lead to a negative cycle of self-doubt and engaging in self-defeating thoughts.

In short, if you are a Rob Wealth profile, ensure to always have self-awareness and put more emphasis on collaboration and open communication with others in order to fully harness your powers.

Biggest Strength: Someone with unwavering sense of self and high self-esteem, purposeful leadership and competitive spirit

Eating God (EG)—The Creative Genius

Eating God (EG), also known as The Creative Genius and sometimes, The Artist, represents talent, creativity, and self-expression. Despite its name, this star actually has nothing to do with food—it signifies artistic flair and a unique approach to life. When prominent in a character and is considered favourable to the daymaster, Eating God (EG) indicates a person with natural creative abilities, excelling in areas like writing, art, design, or performance. These individuals often think outside the box, bring fresh perspectives to the table, and are unafraid of standing out. However, if Eating God is imbalanced or of a poor quality (unsupported by season of birth and is unfavourable to you), Eating God can lead to overindulgence, a scattered focus or someone overly eccentric who bring about excessive display of individualism just for the sake of being different.

If Eating God is one of your dominant characteristics, your energy is often being focused into refining your skills or product, instead of actually being out there talking about it. What sets you apart from the Hurting Officer profiles is that your energy can be described as going inwards rather than outwards. You are also someone who is a non-conformist—you have an original mind; your own thoughts and you own them. You are blessed with natural creativity, intellectual depth, vivid imagination, heightened sensitivity to beauty around you and an innovative mindset. As such you are suited to specialize in roles that prize imagination, focuses on perfecting or refining something and articulate expression of ideas.

If the Eating God exists in excessive or deficient amounts in your chart—meaning it’s either above 80% or entirely absent—you might face certain challenges. These can include feelings of restlessness, a tendency for overindulgence, and a constant craving for new experiences, often making it difficult to commit to long-term projects. This imbalance can lead to difficulties with focus and create instability, as distractions and indulgences pull you away from your main goals. To cultivate a balanced Eating God profile, it’s essential to find harmony between freedom and structure. Grounding practices, like meditation, nature walks, or steady routines, can help stabilize the lively energy of the Eating God.

In relationships, individuals with Eating God as one of their dominant influences seek connections that allow room for exploration and personal growth. They are drawn to intellectually stimulating and emotionally deep relationships, often seeking partners who share their wide-ranging interests and passions. However, their need for novelty and change can sometimes appear as instability, leading to misunderstandings or perceptions of commitment issues. When they feel their freedom is restricted, they may grow restless, and their desire for exploration can occasionally clash with partners who value stability.

Biggest Strength: The art of perfection and refinement, your expensive (but exquisite) taste

Hurting Officer (HO)—The Performer

The Hurting Officer, also known as The Performer, is the showier profile among the Output structures in BaZi. Representing a rebellious and independent spirit, they are bold, artistic, and known for standing out from the crowd. Those with a strong Hurting Officer influence tend to lead lives marked by self-expression and a continuous search for identity, full of exhilarating highs and challenging lows. They are also known as the life of the party.

Much like the Eating God profile, individuals with Hurting Officer as their dominant god embrace their individuality, defy norms, and seek to express themselves in unconventional ways. They are both brilliant and challenging, always striving to be original and unbound by rules. Of all the Ten Gods, Hurting Officer is the one that most desires and values freedom. Unlike the inward focus of the Eating God, Hurting Officer’s energy flows outward—it’s expansive, like a balloon inflating. These independent thinkers are driven by originality and a bold, risk-taking attitude.

A healthy Hurting Officer profile is charismatic, with a magnetic personality that effortlessly draws people to their unique perspectives. This makes them well-suited to roles as influencers, performers, or public figures. Careers that allow them to showcase their originality and give them autonomy are ideal, especially those with less emphasis on teamwork. Freelance work is particularly suited to Hurting Officer types, as it allows them control over their time and avoids the restrictions of conventional work environments. Fields that value originality, such as entrepreneurship, the arts, and advertising, are especially beneficial.

If the Hurting Officer is unbalanced i.e. overly strong or completely missing in your chart, challenges may arise. You may struggle with impulsiveness and aggressiveness, especially in risk-taking and decision-making. A strong desire to be different might lead to defiance of authority simply for the sake of standing out. This drive for freedom can make you resistant to advice, even when it would be beneficial. In extreme cases, attention-seeking behavior can overshadow your true talents.

In relationships, Hurting Officer individuals bring excitement, spontaneity, and unpredictability into the mix. However, their love for freedom can cause unease for loved ones who may find it hard to keep up with their shifting interests and desires. Their resistance to compromise and their unpredictability may also create conflicts in close relationships, especially with partners who value stability. In social circles, their charisma attracts people, but their tendency to challenge norms may alienate those who are more traditional. To create harmony in relationships, mutual understanding and respect are essential.

Biggest Strength: Ability to carry the entire weight alone by the sheer power of charisma, and your originality (also, to an extent—unpredictability)

Direct Wealth (DW) – The Director

Direct Wealth, also known as The Director, reflects your approach to wealth—specifically, how you accumulate, manage, sustain, and utilize your resources. The energy of Direct Wealth embodies stability, reliability, and a preference for tradition and conventional approaches, distinguishing it from its more flamboyant counterpart, Indirect Wealth. Moreover, it also represents the traditional sources of income such as salaries, which comes as a result of personal effort. Direct Wealth extends beyond finances; it also signifies the values, principles, and sense of responsibility that guide a person's life. For those with strong Direct Wealth in their chart—their lives are often centred around their responsibilities, their commitments, and their unshakeable core beliefs.

If Direct Wealth is one of your dominant characteristics and exists in healthy amounts in your chart, you are likely a grounded individual—reliable, responsible, and committed to consistency. Your actions align with your words, and you demonstrate loyalty not only to your partner, family, friends, and employer but also to yourself. You have deep respect for traditional values and take comfort in time-tested customs and practices. Additionally, you possess a natural skill for managing resources—whether financial assets, time, or relationships. You excel at allocating and controlling resources with care, making you dependable in many aspects of life.

Your life is likely to revolve around wealth accumulation, carrying responsibility, and fulfilling obligations. You are well-suited for careers in finance, capital markets, asset management, or any role requiring resource optimization and calculated decision-making.

However, if Direct Wealth is imbalanced or missing from your chart, you might face challenges related to financial stability, responsibility, or resource management. Issues with task delegation and poor time management could also emerge.

In relationships, those with a strong Direct Wealth profile seek a partner who mirrors their stability. They value bonds built on mutual understanding, commitment, and shared traditional values. However, this relentless pursuit of stability can come at a cost to their health, as the pressure to maintain financial security often leads to stress-related ailments.

To fully harness the power of Direct Wealth, it's essential to pursue wealth in a way that feels natural to you. Improving financial literacy, understanding investments, market dynamics, and global financial trends will enhance your path to success. Given that Direct Wealth types tend to shoulder significant responsibilities, integrating stress-relief routines, such as meditation and regular exercise, can help maintain both physical and mental health.

Biggest Strengths: Responsibility, stability, reliability and almost instinctual resource allocation abilities aimed at maximum efficiency. Don’t forget your love of wealth too!

Indirect Wealth (IW)—The Pioneer

Indirect Wealth, also known as The Pioneer, reflects a person’s ability to create income through indirect or unconventional means. Unlike its more serious cousin, Direct Wealth which represents direct income resulting from personal efforts, Indirect Wealth relates to income that does not occur in exchange of the time an individual spends working their jobs—instead, it represents sources of indirect sources of income such as dividends, investments return, lottery winnings and inheritances.

People with strong Indirect Wealth influences are usually long-term visionaries. They are also adept at exploring new ideas and paths—their pioneering, innovative and adventurous spirit make for excellent entrepreneurs. This god also highlights a person’s ability to attract support from others, similar to what Indirect Resources (IR) profiles do with attracting their mentors for valuable advices. While strong Indirect Wealth energy can drive significant achievements, their desire and enthusiasm for new ventures can lead to instability or lack of follow-through. To maintain balance, it helps to temper this pioneering energy with elements that provide stability and grounding, such as having in your chart the presence of Direct Wealth or any of the Resource structure gods (Direct Resources or Indirect Resources) which can help encourage teamwork and collaboration and seek guidance from mentors.

If Indirect Wealth is one of your dominant gods, you’re naturally suited for roles that involve negotiation, networking, strategizing, and forward-thinking. To fully activate the Pioneer’s energy within you, focus on identifying opportunities that align with your strengths and passions. Setting clear goals and structured plans can turn your innovative ideas into real achievements. Collaborating with like-minded individuals and seeking guidance from mentors can provide valuable insights and support—making a pairing with Indirect Resources especially beneficial.

If Indirect Wealth is either overabundant or missing in your chart, you may face challenges with financial habits and decision-making. This imbalance can lead to a lack of long-term planning, a tendency toward impulsive spending, and a strong attraction to quick money and shortcuts. Financial issues may arise from emotionally driven choices and an unclear sense of value. A common example of an imbalanced Indirect Wealth profile is someone who has poor judgement of value, such as being unaware of the cost of basic, everyday items, like a taxi ride or a bag of oranges.

Biggest Strength: Basically, everything Entrepreneurship—pioneering a new product or idea and attracting financial support from others (such as investors)

Direct Officer (DO)—The Diplomat

Direct Officer, also known as The Diplomat, is one of the gods making up the Influence structure in BaZi. This god reflects a person’s relationship with authority, structure, and values—qualities tied to leadership, respect for rules, and an appreciation for order. Think of the discipline of a military officer or the precision of a judge—Direct Officer embodies this essence. While it often involves financial responsibility, it goes beyond material wealth, representing values, principles, and a commitment to stability and tradition. Those with a strong Direct Officer presence in their chart typically live lives centered on duty, resource management, and loyalty to core beliefs.

If you think that Direct Officer seems similar to Direct Wealth from the Wealth structure, you’re not alone. Here’s how they differ:

  • Difference in Motivations: Direct Wealth is driven by the pursuit of financial security and material stability. Direct Officer individuals, however, are grounded in responsibility due to a strong sense of duty, rather than the drive for material gain.
  • Difference in Values: Direct Officers prioritize integrity and adherence to rules, while Direct Wealth types focus on accumulating wealth and achieving financial success.
  • Conflicts in Priorities: If the Direct Officer and Direct Wealth gods clash in your chart, you may often feel torn between fulfilling duties and pursuing financial goals.

If Direct Officer is a dominant god in your chart, you likely embody discipline, structure, and a natural inclination for leadership. Even among friends, you tend to take on guiding roles, leading with clarity and a strong sense of purpose. Integrity is central—trust is not merely a value but a fundamental part of how you live. Once committed to a task or a relationship, you show deep dedication, showcasing loyalty and reliability.

For Direct Officers, material wealth is rarely the top priority. Instead, duty and a strong moral compass guide their lives. However, this deep sense of responsibility can sometimes lead to rigidity, making it difficult to embrace sudden changes or flexible approaches. To fully harness the power of Direct Officer, we advise you to challenge yourself to step out of your comfort zone once in a while and to consider partnership to introduce a balance.

In relationships, you are loving, loyal, and committed, though you may also come across as possessive. You hold high expectations for your partner, expecting the same level of dedication that you bring to the table. Conflicts can arise if your partner doesn’t meet these standards. Ideally, you seek someone who values tradition and shares your conventional outlook. In return, you offer unwavering loyalty, stability, and dedication.

If your Direct Officer is imbalanced in your chart, you might find it challenging to uphold your moral code and sense of duty. Discipline and commitment can become difficult to maintain, and leadership roles may feel like an uphill battle. You may often feel unsuited for leadership and find yourself questioning your sense of purpose.

Biggest Strength: A leader with outstanding character, integrity, discipline and purpose who protects those that are less than him

Seven Killings (7K)—The Warrior

If you think of Direct Officer as the Samurai, then its ‘bolder’ counterpart, Seven Killings, is the Ninja of the Influence structure. In BaZi, Seven Killings is often simply called The Warrior because this god embodies the essence of a warrior—assertiveness, courage, determination, relentlessness, and the daring spirit of a fighter. While Seven Killings also leans toward leadership, its approach tends to be more forceful and direct compared to the cooperative style of Direct Officer.

The influence of Seven Killings varies greatly depending on its balance in your chart. When well-balanced, it promotes strong leadership and strategic thinking. On the other hand, if unbalanced, it can lead to excessive aggression or a tendency toward conflict. To temper this intense energy, it helps to pair Seven Killings with grounding gods from the Resources or Wealth structures, such as Direct Resources or Direct Wealth. These combinations support a thoughtful approach to risk-taking. However, if Seven Killings clashes with any of these grounding gods, you may find yourself prone to taking overly bold risks and displaying an assertiveness that can veer into dangerous territory. It also helps to combine Seven Killings with its softer cousin, Direct Officer, to encourage diplomacy, and also with Indirect Resources to attract valuable advices through mentorship.

If Seven Killings is one of your dominant gods, you’re well-suited for careers that demand decisiveness, courage, resilience, and boldness. You tend to thrive in roles where you can be the ‘game changer’, much like Hurting Officer individuals who excel as solo players. This preference means roles involving extensive teamwork may not come as naturally to you, as you often prefer working independently. However, seeking partnerships can help balance your Seven Killings energy, especially if it’s unbalanced, allowing you to manage your assertiveness and maintain harmony in your interactions and environment. Careers like entrepreneurship or competitive sports are a great fit, as they allow you to take on challenges, lead with confidence, and channel your drive effectively.

In relationships, you’re passionate, protective, and always ready to stand up for those you care about. Much like individuals with strong Direct Officer profiles, you may occasionally face criticism from partners who see you as overly assertive or controlling.

When Seven Killings is imbalanced in your chart, you may find it challenging to respect rules and authority. This imbalance can make you impulsive, impatient, and prone to taking unnecessary risks. It might also affect your ability to lead effectively, and at times, you may struggle with courage and perseverance. Standing up for what you believe in can become difficult, leaving you feeling unanchored and uncertain. Balancing this energy is very essential to bring out the best of your Warrior profile.

Biggest Strength: Unwavering courage and persistence—always focused on the goal

Supplementary and Technical Information on the Ten Gods of BaZi

The Ten Gods in BaZi aren’t actual deities but symbolic representations of elements, seen from the perspective of your Daymaster element. Here, ‘Daymaster’ refers to the day stem of your day pillar in BaZi. At Bazimie, we simplify things by directly interpreting the Ten Gods in abbreviated forms, so there’s no need to worry about translating these symbols.

BaZi consists of ten gods and five structures. Each structure contains two gods—a typical version and a ‘neurotic cousin’ version, each bringing different qualities. Generally, your dominant gods are the top three highest-ranked gods in your chart, based on various factors that go beyond frequency alone. This is also clearly marked in your Bazimie report.

Determining Dominant Gods

Dominant gods reveal insights into your personality, tendencies, and relationships. Although most people have a few gods from one structure, you can have dominant gods from two or more structures. Here’s what determines a god’s dominance:

  • Season of birth
  • Presence in both the heavenly stem (top) and earthly branch (bottom)
  • Appearance in specific pillars and their order within that pillar
  • Number of appearances and whether they stand alone or with others

It’s rare to have all Ten Gods in your chart; most people have about 6–7 gods (5–6 without a birth hour as some people still don’t know their hour of birth). Those with all Ten Gods tend to have complex, layered personalities, often with contradictory traits. On the other hand, people with 6 or fewer gods are often simpler in character and easier to understand.

The Five Structures and Their Associated Gods

Each structure is defined by two gods. The structure of your chart depends on which gods appear most prominently. Here’s a breakdown:

1. Resource Structure: If you have a majority of Direct Resources (DR) and Indirect Resources (IR), you belong to the Resource structure. This often means you’re a strong Daymaster, though not always.

2. Parallel Structure: If Friend (F) and Rob Wealth (RW) dominate your chart, you are in the Parallel structure, also likely indicating a strong Daymaster.

3. Output Structure: If Eating God (EG) and Hurting Officer (HO) are most prominent, you have an Output structure. This structure often aligns with a less-than-strong Daymaster.

4. Wealth Structure: A majority of Direct Wealth (DW) and Indirect Wealth (IW) means you belong to the Wealth structure, often with a less-than-strong Daymaster.

5. Influence Structure: Dominance of Direct Officer (DO) and Seven Killings (7K) places you in the Influence structure, which is also often associated with a less-than-strong Daymaster.

It’s possible to have a mix of structures in your chart, and it’s not uncommon to have one structure entirely missing from your chart too
